This photo was shot from one of the exterior stairs of Gyre, a new building in Omotesandō designed by MVRDV, and shows the surrounding Aoyama neighborhood as you walk away from Omotesandō.
Omotesandō is an avenue connecting Aoyama-dori and Meiji-dori, and a fashion neighborhood between them, with its activity concentrated along the brand shops on the sides of the avenue and having some extension to the small streets away from it. I find interesting that in such a small radius of influence you have completely different urban scales, ranging from the wide avenue with the brand stores on the side to a dense network of small streets and small buildings away from it. It feels as if these urban environments where completely unrelated because of the immediate difference in density and character.
