Sang

Posted by Alfredo J. Martiz J. (Panama City, Panama) on 5 April 2007 in People & Portrait.

That day was amazing, I met this Vietnamese called Sang, he owns a Cycle Rickshaw and gave me a tour around Ho Chi Minh City. This photo is of him getting ready to start the tour. Photo dedicated to Sang, Thank you very much for everything!

Cycle rickshaws are known as cyclo (pronounced see-clo) in Cambodia and Vietnam. In many Asian cities where they are widely used, rickshaw driving provides essential employment for recent immigrants from rural areas, generally impoverished men. In many cities, most drivers do not own their own rickshaws; instead, they rent them from their owners, some of whom own many rickshaws. Driver-ownership rates vary widely. Some countries and cities have banned or restricted cycle rickshaws. They are often prohibited in congested areas of major cities. While they have been criticized for causing congestion, rickshaws are also often hailed as environmentally-friendly, inexpensive modes of transportation.

If you take a look at the photo I presented yesterday, you will see a prohibitory sign for the circulation of cycle rickshaws, you can find that sign in different parts of Ho Chi Minh City as well. I took the tour with Sang days before finding about the Prohibitory Signs, finding out this signs was a surprise for me and I thought about him and other persons that give this service and earn money for their living. What will happen to them?, I hope they will be fine.
