The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, also known as Pearl Bridge, is a suspension bridge in Japan that crosses the Akashi Strait; it links Maiko in Kobe and Iwaya on Awaji Island as part of the Honshū-Shikoku Highway. It is the longest suspension bridge in the world to date, as measured by the length of its center span 1,991 metres (6,532 ft), substantially longer than the second longest suspension bridge, the Danish Great Belt Bridge. Total length is 3,911 metres (12,831 ft). It was planned to be one of three Honshū-Shikoku connecting bridges, annexing two borders of the Inland Sea.

@Craiger: Thank you Craiger!
Impressive! Makes you think... how the hell did they built this bridge?? and how the hell did you take this pic?? I think you made a good choice in making it a black/white pic, 'cause it makes you focus more on the subject and beauty of the structure than in any other aspect of the view. The lines, everything is so simetric. Un deleite para los ojos...

@paperdoll: Thank you Paperdoll, I was wondering the same about the construction, thanks for the kind words!

@Pero: Thank you Pero!
A super composition. I love the perspective here too. I visited this bridge last year and was awe-struck at the scale of the thing. What amazed me most was that the Hanshin earthquake occurred during it's construction and had absolutely no effect on it while the rest of Kobe was raized to the ground. An outstanding feat of engineering, nicely captured.

@Stu: Thank you Stu, I still wonder how did they build this, it is really an outstanding feat of engineering!

@Lucca: Thank you Lucca, I happened the same to me when I got back and saw the photo in the computer, I could not keep my eyes of it!

Very nice! Maybe burn in the details of the buildings over the horizon a bit more. I really like the shadow cast on the water from the bridge. The sun was directly over head, and you did a great job waiting for the perfect lighting.
13 Feb 2007 8:52pm
@Michael Zhang: Thank you very much Michael, I will try burning the details of the buildings to see what happens!
Now you are copying Fred!

Great photo. The first thing that I asked myself was, how do you managed to get under the bridge to take this photo. Well, it really doesn't matter. It's superb.
18 Feb 2007 6:09am
@Ahraht: Thank you Ahraht, that day we stopped near the bridge after crossing it and they have some plaza with some things used for the construction and explanation about the structure, I was looking it from a side and then decided to take a walk, then I saw it from that angle and I was amazed!
